The Role of Murabahas in Supporting Small Businesses

One of the unique financing options that CEDS Finance offers is the murabaha, an Islamic-compliant debt structure. This financing method is particularly beneficial for business owners who prefer interest-free loans in accordance with Islamic law.

What is a Murabaha?

Murabaha is an Islamic financing structure whereby no interest is charged; however, the borrower agrees to pay a fee in lieu of interest, in addition to principal. Murabaha is an acceptable form of credit sale under  Sharia (Islamic religious law). CEDS is the only organization in Colorado, and one of just a handful nationwide, that offers Islamic-compliant lending. This product allows Muslim entrepreneurs to access financing without violating Islamic principles that prohibit interest-based lending. By providing this specialized service, CEDS fills a critical gap in the financial landscape, enabling Muslim business owners and other underserved entrepreneurs to access capital in a manner consistent with their religious and cultural values.

Key Features of Murabahas:

  • Interest-Free: No interest is charged; instead, a fixed profit margin is agreed upon.
  • Transparency: Both the cost and the profit margin are clearly defined and agreed upon by both parties.
  • Flexibility: Repayment is made in installments, making it easier for businesses to manage their cash flow.
